Hard Liquor and Porn conquers Britain

in

Our film festival recently made it's European debut in a one night showcase as part of the London Short Film Festival on January 12 2008. With triple the capacity (over 300 people) at the Roxy Bar and Screen, Londoner's were exposed to some of the best short comedy sex themed short films from the 8 year history of Darryl's Hard Liquor and P0rn Film Festival.

Currently an annual event in Toronto and Montreal, Darryl and Jill were thrilled when Philip Ilson and Kate Taylor invited them to bring a program across the pond. Plus it was Darryl's first encounter with Europe (and undoubtedly Europe's first encounter with him) and his first plane ride in 12 years! (my favorite moment was when Darryl pointed out the cool digital map feature where you could see where the plane was in relation to the ocean - finally something techy that Darryl didn't know about.) We were also thrilled to travel with Canadian burlesque dancer Evangeline Demone and later met with our friend Marianne who also made the trek from Montreal.

On Friday Jan. 11 Darryl and I participated as judges and presenters of the Lo Budget Film Award as part of the London Short Film Festival - "Shhh" By Ben Slotover, Peter Waldbeck and Paul Elliot won the award.

On Saturday night we were lucky to have recruited some volunteers (Marianne, Katie and Maddie) to cut up bits of fun fur and offer our underdressed audience some much needed accessorizing.

Fur, beaver and beaver were a theme while wide open spaces were at a premium in the crammed space. To accommodate the overflow of audience we ran the program twice. We were also grateful to have some special guests at our event including Harry Miskin from TVBOMB, Simon Anderson and friends High Commission of Canada of Canada House, Heidi Reitmaeir of the Tate Gallery,Elizabeth Renzetti, UK Correspondent for The Globe and Mail and friends and more.

We are very grateful for all the work (and good times hanging out at London clubs) with our on the ground publicist Gabriel Opoku and of course our Toronto publicist Ingrid of GAT Productions. Also special thanks to fab photographer Elinor Jones for shooting the event. See her photos here.

Our festival garnered a number 1 pick in TIme Out London as a film event "Finally, an adult film festival curated by Canadians comes to London.".

As well there seems to be some interest to take the show to Italy.

Thanks to the Canada Council for providing some travel funding and to Kate and Philip for supporting our event and having us participate.

Special thanks of course to all the filmmakers for their great work - if it wasn't for you...well we wouldn't have a show obviously.

Ta ta. Till next time.

Jill and Darryl
